The Landover Hills Volunteer Fire Department is always looking to increase our Volunteer staffing. This is great way to support the Volunteer system and support your Community. If you ever thought about becoming a firefighter, now is your chance to make it happen. We are looking for people from a wide age range and background. 

We are also seeking trained Volunteers from other jurisdictions that want to expand their level of training and experience. Below are the different types of Membership and Application process.

Active Membership - This person is a minimum of 18 years of age,  they obtain and maintain all required training as prescribed by the Prince George's County Volunteer Fire Commission. Any one that joins the County after November 11th of 1994, must obtain Volunteer Recruit School 32 hour,  EMT-B and Firefighter I within 30 Months of Membership. These members will also obtain 50 LOSAP points a year. This member shall be required to spend approximately 8 - 14 hours per week at the station.

Junior Membership- This is basically an apprenticeship program for young adults. This person is between the ages of 16 and 18 years of age. The Department also reserves the right not to accept these members based on the need of the Department. These members are required to maintain a straight "C" average in school, and are required to show their report cards and attendances report the Fire Chief each quarter of the school year. Each Junior Member shall obtain a work permit, and a permission slip from their parents. Shall obtain and maintain required training. These individuals will be allowed to participate in Fire Department Training and on actual calls but shall not be permitted in burning building until they reach their 18th birthday and have completed Firefighter I.  

Associate  Membership- This person is not interested in or capable of  riding emergency apparatus. But they are willing to help in fundraising activites and administrative duties. Secretarial duties, such as filing, record and report etc. 

Out of County or Out of State Membership (Riding Status) - Our Department encourages the participation of experienced firefighters from other counties or states in both operational status (members) and observer status (non-members). Each member shall obtain and maintain all required training. And spend an average of one weekend a month at the station. Experienced firefighters from other jurisdictions may ride as observers with the prior permission of a Chief Officer or Line Officer.   

Application Process 

In order to apply for Membership of the Department, all interested personnel shall complete a Application Package. Once this is done, interested personnel shall bring it to the next regular scheduled Department Meeting. Meetings are held the first Thursday of every Month at 1930 hours. The person will be voted in, and placed on a probation period.  The Application will be sent to the County, and in about 2-3 weeks, we will call you to go take a physical. Once your physical comes back you will be assigned a Identification Number. When the Station receives this information, you will be allowed to start your training and or ride depending on your previous training.  Applications may be picked up at the station from one of the officers, normally after 1500 hours.

Frequently asked Questions

1) Is there a cost for training? No, the class are free. Some of the more advanced classes may have a fee, but we having a training budget to assist members with the cost.

2) I heard something about a tax break? Yes, after six  years of active service, you can get $3,500 dollars in tax break from the  State each year. The number of active service years required is being reduced from six years to three years over the next four  years.

3) Is there any type of retirement for Volunteers? Yes, Prince George's County has a Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP). It is basically a retirement for volunteer firefighters.   Once you obtain 25 years of service and age 65, you will receive $250.00 dollars a month.
